A few weeks ago, author Joel Goldman offered the Kindle edition of THE DEAD MAN for free and I grabbed a copy, hoping for a good mystery. I didn't let the "thriller" tag deter me (I often avoid thrillers) and read through the grisly prologue with growing interest.Here's the story overview from another book page (the Amazon page is filled with hype, and not much about the actual story): "Milo Harper wants former FBI agent Jack Davis' help. People in Harper's study of the human brain are starting to die--and dying exactly in the very ways they have dreamed...Harper wants Jack to get to the truth and counter lawsuits aimed at the foundation. But when Jack investigates, the truth explodes: a serial killer is lurking inside one of the most advanced research facilities in the world. For Jack, the case will shatter illusions, raise ghosts, and take him onto both sides of the law--and into the path of a murderer's terrifying rage..."
This is the second of the Jack Davis Thrillers, but I wasn't too lost on Jack's life without having read the first. Goldman put in backstory when his protagonist was triggered to memories. At first, when this happened during a fairly active scene, it seemed intrusive, but I got used to the style.
All the characters were well-drawn and believable; the "thriller" aspects (blood, gore, graphic violence) wasn't too much to bear, and the story resolutions were effective. That's resolutions--plural--because protagonist Jack Davis had relationship issues to deal with, as well as his odd health condition, and his forced retirement from the FBI.
A lot going on, here. Most was handled well, although the ventures into the points of view of other characters didn't seem necessary, and a few scenes really gave away too much. But then, I had determined the perp early on, and read along, learning more about Jack and wondering when he would pickup on the clues.
In all, since it had few editing and formatting glitches, THE DEAD MAN was a satisfactory read from a competent writer.

The Dead Man Jack Davis Thrillers Book 2 eBook Joel Goldman Reviews
A thriller you won't want to put down from a writer who has mastered his craft. Goldman understands the human condition and skillfully weaves a tale full of richly developed characters who are believeable enough to be people we all know. Thoughtful insight into the complex inner working of the minds of the characters make the reader aware of just how close every one of us is to the potential of being both the villain and the hero. A thought provoking and gripping read I enjoyed thoroughly. A writer to watch who should be counted among the elite of his peers.
If you have high-blood pressure, don't read this book. If you don't have high blood-pressure, book the appointment with your doctor prior to reading. If you have insomnia, don't read this book; it won't help you fall asleep. Oh, what the heck, your awake anyway, Go ahead and read it.
Edge-of-the-seat, blood pressure raising tension; suspense. Tight, spare writing without excess detail keeps the action and drama going. Real, flawed characters you can relate to. Realistic dialogue. It's all there.
Didn't note who the editor was, but first rate editing with no glaring grammatical errors to distract from the writing. Highly recommend this book for fans of the detective genre. Well done, Mr. Goldman.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first one I read about Jack Davis. Joel Goldman keeps the pace fast and the story interesting. I have some trouble with his character's disability being believable in some of the circumstances he gets himself into but it does add to the mystery. I find that I care about him and that makes the story more memorable. This one has so many twists and characters that I was not able to guess who done it until it was revealed. I read a lot of mysteries and it takes a clever twist to keep me guessing. I will continue to read about Jack Davis and thank Joel Goldman for his entertaining series.
Review of The Dead man by Joel Goldman
A man and his wife are stabbed in their bed and cut to pieces. Their daughter hears the murderer coming down the hall towards her room and goes out the window, dropping down to the ground and luckily just twisting her ankle and hides in the bushes. By the time the sheriff shows up the girl Maggie Brennan and her uncle are out front covered in blood.
Jack Davis, who has been forced to retire from the FBI due to a shaking disorder is about to get evicted from the house he’s renting by his new land lord. He has a lease but the original landlord is the mother of the girl who actually inherited the house and wants him out. They work it out and he’ll pay the rent to her and she’ll live in the house also. Jack has accepted a job as head of security for Milo Harper a billionaire who own Harper Institute of the Mind which studies the brain. One of their projects is the study of dreams and two of their volunteers have died , one of alleged suicide and the other supposedly falling off the third floor of a parking garage. One of the researchers who is an expert on memory an PTSD turns out to be Maggie Brennan who now is a PHD who has dreams about that horrible night when her parents were killed.
The story goes on with four people dead by seemly self induced causes. The story moves on fairly slowly and I had trouble sticking with it. Too many words and unnecessary paragraphs. I thought it would never end. I’ve read other Joel Goldman’s books and really enjoyed them. This one gets three stars from me this time.
